How do FROM talismans work?

Talismans are carved stones hung inside enclosed spaces so the night Creatures cannot walk in, but only while every door and window to the outside stays closed. Wave one around outdoors and it is just a rock with symbols on it.

What they are on screen

On the show they read as small stones or plaques marked with rune-like symbols. Residents nail or hang them near entrances to homes, Colony House, and other buildings they need to survive the night inside. The look is crude and handmade, which is part of why everyone argues about who carved the first one and whether the symbols mean anything beyond keeping the night out.

Rules the town learned on camera

Protection is indoor-only: a talisman has to mark an enclosed space, not your jacket pocket or the middle of Main Street. The seal matters as much as the rock. If someone opens a door or window to the outside, the barrier fails and the Creatures can enter. At night the Creatures hunt outside those protected rooms, which is why curfew, slammed doors, and Boyd's speeches all orbit the same ritual.

Where they come from (so far)

Boyd Stevens found the first batch in a forest cave now called the Talisman Cave after getting lost in the woods. He sheltered there at night, saw the Creatures stop at the entrance, and brought stones back to town so every building could post one. Father Khatri and other residents later spell out the hanging rules for newcomers like the Matthews family. The show has not fully explained who made the originals or why the symbols work.

What still has no clean answer

FROM has not confirmed a single in-universe manufacturer, a scientific mechanism, or why the symbols work. This page sticks to the early-town rules Boyd and Father Khatri teach newcomers. Open the flagged Seasons 3 and 4 section below when you want later-season complications.

Later seasons add other carved objects and forest totems that may not follow the same contract as Colony House door talismans. Season 3 sends Kenny's group on a supply run toward the forest settlement, where cabins and totems raise more questions about rules the town still does not understand.

Season 4 Episode 7 tests whether settlement totems can kill the ordinary night Creatures. Kenny drives a totem spear into one; it laughs and the pack closes in. Elgin later kills a reanimated Roger with a totem spear, so the weapons seem to work on certain reanimated threats, not the nightly predators.

Season 4 Episode 8 opens with the town arguing on the Colony House porch about whether totems protect anyone at all. Donna tells Boyd residents are finally grasping that talismans will not save them from everything.

Season 4 Episode 9 is where Tabitha tells Boyd the talismans cannot stop the Man in Yellow. He entered her home in daylight despite the door talisman and took Ethan's drawings. She reads the talisman engraving as a map of the children's graves with two extra marks for herself and Jade, then she and Jade seal the tunnel dig site with a tarp and a talisman before descending for the bones.

How do FROM talismans work?

Hang one inside an enclosed space you want to sleep in, usually by the door that opens to the outside. While every opening stays shut, the night Creatures cannot enter that room. That is the core contract the town teaches newcomers after Boyd brought stones back from the Talisman Cave.

Do talismans work outside?

No. A talisman only protects an enclosed indoor space, or another sealed enclosure like an overturned RV. Carry one outdoors and it does nothing useful against the Creatures.

What happens if a door or window is opened?

Opening any door or window to the outside breaks the seal, even if the talisman is still hanging. That is why panic scenes often involve someone cracking a window or leaving a door unlatched, and why the Creatures treat curfew like an invitation.

Where do talismans come from on FROM?

Boyd Stevens discovered them in the Talisman Cave after getting lost in the forest at night. He saw the Creatures refuse to cross the entrance, took stones back to town, and residents started posting them on buildings. The show has not fully explained who carved the originals or why the symbols repel the Creatures.

Do talismans work in vehicles or other enclosed spots?

Yes, within the same rules. If the space is fully enclosed and every opening to the outside stays shut, the protection can apply there too, not only inside a house.
